Dear PMI Community,
As a new year begins, I have been reflecting on how fortunate we are to be a part of a globally-recognized profession that is changing the world for the better. While 2021 saw continued challenges and loss related to the ongoing pandemic, there were also many instances of hope and progress toward a brighter future, a future in which some of the world’s biggest challenges will be solved through projects and programs. I am grateful for your perseverance and resiliency to make the world a better place, and I’ve had the honor of seeing first-hand how you have supported one another personally and professionally. True to our legacy since we were established 52 years ago, PMI’s incredibly strong and closely connected community of volunteers, chapters, members, staff and Board of Directors have worked together to provide the knowledge, network, and resources that have enabled millions of individuals to deliver value and impact to organizations, governments, NGO’s and academic institutions around the world.
2021 was a year of great progress and achievement for the global PMI community. We launched a new, ambitious strategic plan to expand our community and collectively multiply our impact on the world. Our community pledged over 100k hours of service in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as part of our Hours for Impact campaign; and we introduced a suite of new certifications and courses that enable a wider range of individuals with the necessary tools to stand out in the ever-changing industry of project management and beyond.
One thing that has endured as a constant throughout PMI’s five decades of change and growth is the essential role of volunteers in leading us forward. Tony Appleby, our immediate past Board Chair, recently shared his perspective and gratitude in this video which you may have seen shared on our LinkedIn page just before the New Year.
Recognizing our Board of Directors
Our Board of Directors play a critical role in guiding and shaping our strategy for the future. I especially want to recognize three dedicated members of our board who have completed their tenures at end of 2021: Randy Black, Beth Partleton, and LuAnn Piccard. While we will miss their counsel, I know they will continue to be active leaders in our community. I’d also like to welcome Sarina Arcari, Alison Bakken, and Jennifer Tharp who is returning to the Board and will be serving as the 2022 Board Chair.
Looking Ahead to 2022
I’m excited to begin the new year. It will be a time of continued dedication to reaching our strategic objectives: broadening our reach, extending our impact, and building lasting relationships. In 2022, we will work as one PMI to:
Broaden Our Reach: Project professionals will always be the heart of our community and collectively we have a great wealth of knowledge, resources, and experience. The PMI community stands to make enormous global impact by sharing our collective knowledge with others who need PM skills to make their ideas reality. In 2022, we will serve this growing community of changemakers by extending our regional operations, building coalitions with other leading associations and organizations, and connecting and welcoming new audiences to our community.
Extend our Impact: At PMI, we enable individuals not just for business, but for the broader good. PMI continues to be an organization with a social conscience, as reflected by our 30+ year history of driving social impact through the PMI Educational Foundation and through academic engagement. In 2022, PMI will act as a catalyst for change, bringing likeminded organizations together, collaborating and sharing best practices for social impact efforts. Additionally, we aspire to enable each individual in our community through a diverse, modular set of offerings, including certifications, courses, and opportunities for networking.
Build Lasting Relationships: PMI is dedicated to developing a culture that embraces and celebrates our differences, and works to create an environment of respect, trust, integrity and fairness in our words and actions. We aim to continually meet the personal and professional growth needs of our community members, and to advocate for their skills with employers. In 2022, we will build a renewed sense of trust and inclusion by undertaking programs to bolster our global network of chapters and building upon our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion program with our extended community.
It goes without saying that 2021, like 2020 before it, was a difficult year for the entire world. But we also see the need for our community like never before; project professionals and changemakers at large play a central role in rebuilding and driving our economic recovery and beyond. Our community is strong, and together, we can shape the future.
I wish you much success this year,
Interim President & CEO, PMI
