Virtual Communities Project – Frequently Asked Question

What Does “Normalization of Value” Mean?

The generally accepted definition for “normalization” is “cause to conform to a standard or norm.”

Within the context of the Virtual Communities Project, the process of normalizing community value is meant to suggest that a consistent reference point or benchmark by which all member services will be measured is being set.

To accomplish this end, the Virtual Communities Project team, in conjunction with the PMI Component and Community Relations staff, created a performance management framework that will establish the minimal acceptable standards for the core services that are offered by a community.

Although the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, normalization is not the same as equalization – to make equal.

The goal of VCP is to promote consistently high standards across all of the communities, thus normalizing value.

A new update of the VCP Frequently Asked Questions document is available here.

LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

Call for Presentation Proposals for 2008 Latin America Leadership Institute Meeting

The PMI Leadership Institute Advisory Group is accepting presentation proposals for the 2008 Latin America Leadership Institute Meeting, which will be held 9–10 August in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The deadline to propose a topic is 30 May.

Content must be focused on and applicable to all PMI chapters, colleges and SIGs. Presentations can discuss the roles of officers, such as those in membership, finance, communication and voluntarism.

The purpose of the Leadership Institute Meeting is to provide training and networking that enhance the experience of PMI’s volunteer leaders. Therefore, presentations should not overtly market or endorse commercial products and services.

Also, topics related to general project management practice, such as tools and techniques, may not be applicable to the Leadership Institute and thus might be a better fit for a PMI global congress.

Please access the proposal form, which is located in the Component Leadership Online Community > News section, and submit presentation proposals or questions to Leadership Institute Administrator Gil Marder, by 30 May.
