The
Value of Best Practices in Project Management
Harold
Kerzner, PhD, MS, MBA
Projects have
become the new approach in business management. The methodology of
project management involves business processes.
Therefore, says
Harold Kerzner, PhD, MS, MBA, it is crucial to capture best practices
for constant improvements in work efficiencies, estimation accuracies
and waste reduction.
With its
abilities to strengthen the organisation’s reputation and gain
new business, project management is further justified for an
organisation’s survival.
Dr. Kerzner,
the author of the international best-selling textbook Project Management: A
Systems Approach to Planning, Scheduling and Controlling,
lists many places to find best practices, such as periodicals, seminars
and graduate-level theses. One of the examples is A Guide to the Project
Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)—Third
Edition.
What is the
best starting point? Dr. Kerzner believes that you have to seek out and
discover best practices. A good place to begin is with your
company’s definition of success and excellence in project
management — every company and industry may have its own criteria
and definition.
In order to
capture best practices, it is not wise to wait until the end of the
project to review successes and failures before making improvements.
Dr. Kerzner
attributes failures in best practices to the lack of stability, clarity
or understanding of the best practice. Other causes include incorrect
use of best practices, or identification of a best practice that lacks
rigour or is based on erroneous judgment.
Dr. Kerzner
will hold seminars
titled Achieving
Project Management Excellence in Shanghai, Beijing
and Hong Kong in August this year.

PMI
Component Mentor Programme Strengthens
Presence in Asia Pacific
The PMI
Component Mentor Programme will magnify its presence in Asia Pacific to
meet the needs of the expansive region more effectively and promote
organisational growth. Thorugh the programme, region component mentors
provide guidance, advice and information to component leaders to
enhance component management and leadership development.
Beginning on 1
January 2008, the programme in the Asia Pacific region will realign
from its current two regions to four regions, adding two new mentor
positions in 2008:
The new
regional structure taking effect on 1 January 2008 is:
Region 9 –
Northeast Asia:
Hong Kong, Japan,
Macau, Korea,
Taiwan
Region 10
– Australia/New Zealand
Region 11
– Western Asia:
Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan,
India, Maldives, Nepal,
Pakistan, Sri Lanka
Region 15 -
South East Asia:
Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Philippines,
Singapore, Thailand, Timor, Vietnam
The four
mentors within Asia Pacific will have their specific region/areas to
oversee. However, they may choose to collaborate and support one
another in various ways. PMI Global Operations Centre and Asia Pacific
Regional Service Centre in Singapore will support all
mentors.
Besides
offering additional leadership opportunities, more component mentors in
the field are an advantage to PMI volunteer leaders. The new regional
structure will allow greater flexibility to manage geographic distances
and time zones and greater possibilities for networking, face-to-face
events and collaboration.
Recruitment for
vacant component mentor positions in 2008, including regions 9, 11, and
15, began in April. For more information please refer to PMI Volunteer Opportunities website. Following
validation on minimal requirements, an application package will be sent
to qualified candidates who register on the Volunteer site. All
eligible and motivated volunteer leaders should not miss this opportunity.
For more
information about the Component Mentor Programme, volunteer opportunities or PMI’s
component activities in the Asia Pacific region, please contact Region
9 Mentor Sajith Madapatu, PMP,
Region 10 Mentor Gordon
Bartlett, PMP or PMI Component Mentor Program Coordinator Nancy Berger.

The new Vice
President of Volunteer Development Eddie Lam, PMP, gave a rousing
presentation on “Leadership Development Through Participation as
Volunteers” and called for more member participation.
PMI believes
that volunteerism adds value to professional development, and Mr. Lam
reinforced the philosophy by introducing the integrated leadership
development programmes PMI offers: Leadership Institute Meetings,
Leadership institute Masters Class and PMI Learn.
Rising
membership numbers is a testimony of the philosophy’s strength.
At the chapter’s inception in June 1997, there were only six
members. Today, PMI Hong Kong Chapter registers more than 1,100
members.
Members find
the advantages of their volunteer participation to be far reaching.
These advantages include the ability to: earn Professional Development
Units (PDUs), enhance their credibility and professional
development, maximise networking opportunities and be part of
establishing worldwide standards.
